Strengthening Women’s Leadership and Gender Equity in Global Health to Accelerate Implementation of ICPD

Women in Global Health recognise the landmark ICPD adopted by 179 countries in Cairo Egypt 25 years ago in 1994. We recognise the impact of the Programme for the rights of women and girls, gender equality and therefore for sustainable development and all of humanity. We support the ambition expressed in the Nairobi Statement on ICPD25 ‘Accelerating the Promise’ to accelerate the full and effective implementation of commitments made at ICPD. We are a global network committed to gender transformative leadership in global health and gender parity in global health leadership. Gender equity will strengthen the health workforce and a strong gender equal health workforce is central to accelerating delivery of ICPD commitments. We commit to the following:

1. Convening key stakeholders and decision makers to strengthen women’s voice and leadership in global health decision making at all levels from community to global.

2. Through our leadership with WHO of the Gender Equity Hub of the Global Health Worker Network ensure gender inequity in the health workforce is acknowledged and addressed.

3. Enable WGH national and regional chapters to champion the rights of women and girls and gender equality in order to accelerate ICPD implementation everywhere.

4. As a co-convenor with Women Deliver and the International Women’s Health Coalition of the Alliance for Gender Equality and UHC, continue to campaign for a Universal Health Coverage model that fully integrates SRHR and meets the health needs of all women and girls.
