FIND & WGH Discussion Paper

All countries have committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to deliver Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.  The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a critical spotlight on the role of testing in health. Containing the spread of COVID-19 will depend on effective diagnostics being accessible to all, including women and girls, who are often the most marginalised in health systems.

Even before COVID-19, however, the greatest gap in disease management was in diagnosis, not in treatment – up to 65% of cases for some diseases are never diagnosed. Countries cannot deliver UHC when so many people are not tested and diagnosed. 
​
The Foundation for Innovative Diagnostics (FIND) and Women in Global Health (WGH) are developing a programme to build the case for empowering women as self-carers, care-givers, health professionals and decision makers to help close the gap in diagnosis, strengthen primary healthcare, capitalize on digital tools, and support UHC.

As a first step in the programme, FIND and WGH have developed a Discussion Paper on Testing, Women’s Empowerment and UHC that we are making public here as part of a consultation that will feed into a comprehensive report on closing the testing gap for women, to be launched in October 2020.
​
We are inviting you to complete a short survey to give us feedback on the Discussion Paper  and its 6 themes:

Why isn’t testing reaching all women who need it?
  1. Women’s Access to Diagnostic Testing
  2. Health Systems Reaching all Women and Girls
  3. Reaching Women with Testing in Humanitarian Settings and Fragile States
​
How can women’s potential be engaged to drive testing?
  1. Women health workers - if enabled - will deliver testing
  2. Women influencing testing in their communities and families
  3. Women influencing testing as political decision makers
We are keen to hear from you about points we have missed, data, case studies, good practice examples and any other information and perspectives that would contribute to the FIND/WGH program on women, testing and Universal Health Coverage.
